A New York based company, Shirk Meats, has recalled approximately 2,478 pounds of pork and beef products due to possible Listeria Monocytogenes contamination.

Those especially at risk to become ill due to Listeria include: pregnant women, newborns, those with a weak immune system, people with cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, or aids. Also, people who take gluticocorticosteriods (a medicine given to help prevent inflammation) and the elderly.

According to the Center for Disease Control, “A person with listeriosis usually has fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Almost everyone who is diagnosed with listeriosis has “invasive” infection, in which the bacteria spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract. The symptoms vary with the infected person.”
