On February 10, the First Lady made an inspiring announcement: More than 100 companies in the construction industry have committed to hiring more than 100,000 American veterans over the next five years.
Michelle Obama’s Joining Forces initiative has made a powerful difference in the lives and of our veterans as well as their family members. The companies “made this commitment not just because it’s the patriotic thing to do, and not just because they want to repay our veterans for their service to our country, but because they know that it’s the smart thing to do for their business.”
During the conference, two veterans spoke about their transition to civilian employment, and about living those dreams. One veteran, a civil engineer for Bechtel is working on a project to build a train to Dulles Airport – one of the largest construction projects in the U.S.
Construction will soon be one of the industries leading the charge in this good deed. It’s expected to grow rapidly in the coming years, creating more than 1.5 million jobs by 2022. These are good jobs with good wages that provide economic security. These jobs can’t be outsourced or sent overseas.
