Simple Tips for Kids Heading Back to School

It’s that time of year again. Our kids are getting ready to head back to school. Here are some simple tips they can follow for safe traveling:

•    Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes in advance so you are not rushing down the driveway or street.
•    As the bus approaches, stand at least 5 giant steps or 10 feet away from the roadside. Line up with your classmates away from the street.
•    Obey the bus driver. Sit facing forward, use your inside voice, and don’t stick anything out the window. This includes your hands and arms.
•    Take it slow getting off the school bus. Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before getting out of your seat and make sure the bus driver says it is OK to get off. It’s important to watch your step when getting off and to never push other kids when getting off.
•    If you are crossing the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road at least 10 feet ahead of the bus before you cross in front of it. Make sure the driver knows you are there.
•    If you drop something on your way across the street, make sure you tell the driver and make sure they understand that you dropped something before going to get it.
•    Even though you are at a crosswalk or the bus driver dropped you off at school or your house doesn’t mean that they are aware of you. ALWAYS look left, then right, then left again before crossing.
