The East Village Explosion Was Likely Caused By Improper Gas Lines

The owner of Sushi Park, Hyeonil Kim, has said that the only gas line coming into the building where his restaurant was located was in his restaurant. Where the gas for the apartments above his restaurant was coming from is now considered the likely cause for the explosion that rocked the East Village last week and left at least 3 without their lives, hundreds without homes and character of the East Village forever changed.

Mayor Bill de Blasio also suggested at a news conference on Friday that city officials had a similar suspicion about the gas lines. It is now believed the gas to the apartments over Sushi Park was improperly coming in from the neighboring building 119 Second Avenue. “There’s certainly a possibility of impropriety,” Mr. de Blasio said.
