Massive Mount Vernon Fire Rips Through Multiple Buildings

On Monday, October 20th dozens of firefighters were called to the scene of a fire on Gramatan Avenue. The fire, which started in the basement of Sal’s deli, had spread to two apartments by the time the firefighters arrived.

“Upon arrival we had tremendous smoke pushing out intense heat in the basement and it ran right across the roof into the other stores,” Deputy Chief Tom Duffy.

Due to the aid of the 37 firefighters who responded to the scene there were no serious injuries.

Authorities are still investigating what may have caused the fire.
