Researchers striving to reduce the amount of construction worker injury and fatalities in highway work zones have designed a state of the art “smart vest.”
The “smart vest,” developed by Virginia Tech Researches uses radio sensors to give construction workers sporting the vest a 5-6 second warning before a collision occurs. The technology would also warn approaching vehicles if they were dangerously close to hitting a worker.
According to researcher, Kristen Hines, “any warning we can give them is better than no warning at all.”
Eventually the goal is to provide this type of technology to an array of our door workers. “There are folks monitoring the status of interstates, policemen [and] first responders. Anyone who has to be out on the interstate with passing vehicles could benefit from an individualized warning.” – Tom Martin, Virginia Tech Professor of Engineering.
