Nearly 50% of NYC’s Food Manufacturing Workers Hurt on the Job

A new report suggests that 42% of workers surveyed in NYC’s food manufacturing industry have been injured on the job.

106 workers were surveyed in New York’s food processing and distribution sectors. The report states that 56.7% of the workers never received safety and health training from their employer.

Of those workers injured, more than 10% reported that their employer required them to perform a risky task, while 15.1% percent slipped or fell, 14.2% were cut, 11.3% suffered from headaches and 10.4% had a back injury. 43.5% of workers who reported an injury did not receive free medical care.

NYC employs over 14,000 workers, 70% of which are immigrants and 64% only have a high school diploma or less.
